Wonder Mike, Master Gee & Hen Dog...'RAPPER'S DELIGHT'
(Dated June 9th, 2013)
“I said a hip, hop, the hippie - the hippie
To the hip hip-hop, and you don't stop
The rock it to the bang-bang, boogie say "up jump"
The boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat
Now, what you hear is not a test; I'm rapping to the beat
And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet
See I am Wonder Mike and I'd like to say "hello"
To the black, to the white, the red and the brown, the purple and yellow
But first I gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie
Say "up jump" the boogie to the bang-bang boogie…”
If, you like me, remember where you were and how you felt upon hearing Wonder Mike, Master Gee and Big Bad Hank recite 15 minutes of rap poetry in motion on “Rappers Delight” back in 1979, then PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS MESSAGE. Utilising Chic's Good Times, the summer anthem of 1979, it was probably the first time we heard a group alternating lead vocals rapping rather than singing on a massive and universal commercial hit. Its impact 34 years later is still on-going considering there was no template for this new genre of black music called Hip Hop that came out of the Bronx in the USA.
Those individuals are instrumental in providing the platform for other super-rapping outfits to carry the baton and have further commercial and underground success around the world. Their debut album showed the world that rap artists could be considered as recording artists, hence the entourage of acts like Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Sequence, Soul Sonic Force, Run DMC, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, The Jungle Brothers, Salt N Pepper to Black Eye Peas being examples of how Hip Hop & Rap have generated a culture which shows that much good can come from some of the concrete jungle neighbourhoods. Rap and Hip Hop is part of the major make up of today's commercial pop albeit the beats or the lyrical flow and a lot of that credit is down to the now legendary delivery of Master Gee, Wonder Mike and Big Bank Hank's party anthem linguistics.
Due to contractual reasons in the States, Wonder Mike and Master Gee are no longer allowed to use the name Sugarhill Gang! We received a very polite and humbling letter from their solicitor/manager asking Street Sounds to change the artist billing name. I have spoken to them and understand the situation. It is my understanding that Joseph Robinson Jr. now owns the name ‘Sugarhill Gang’. My personal feelings are not important and if voiced could instigate immense litigation (!), BUT I will say that I have seen this happen before and one of the most important and fundamental principles I have always followed is to respect the artists who have given us a piece of their souls in their performances, therefore even though we do not have to do this, I have made the decision to assist these iconic legends and comply with their request. From now on Wonder Mike and Master Gee will be professionally known as ‘Rapper’s Delight’.
I have a great deal invested in these guys. For those who don’t know my history, one of my first jobs was at PYE records where I was asked to evaluate the potential of the Sugarhill Records label for possible licencing in the UK. I flew to the States and met Joe Robinson and Sylvia Robinson, owners of the label, and after hearing “Rappers Delight” could hardly contain myself and yes reported back about this new genre of music and quite frankly told my bosses in London that they would be f****** crazy not to sign the label (oh, I also had heard Positive Force “We Got The Funk”, while in the studio). I was the PYE representative that welcomed Sugarhill Gang to the UK and blitzed the clubs on a whirlwind promo tour when the record started to explode and so feel like these guys are part of my family!
Please ask all Hip Hop fans and music lovers to support Wonder Mike and Master Gee; 2 of the ORIGINAL pioneers of Hip Hop! Please tell your friends to come to the Coronet on 22nd June and meet the originators of Hip Hop…shout it from the roof tops and support the guys under their new name ‘Rapper’s Delight’!!!
It is not for us to ask the reasons why this has happened; we can only make our own educated guesses, but please, if there are any individuals who want to knock what is after all only a name change, then think before doing it, as Wonder Mike and Master Gee have given 34 years of their lives to their music and to us! Wonder Mike, Master Gee and Hen Dog, you have the love, respect and support of Street Sounds. x
